Crime Watch Meeting

Monday, June 28th, 2010 IMPD Officer Tim Blackwell came to Bayswater to talk to our residents about crime watch and to reassure everyone that the police department IS out there to help.  He gave a crowd of over 40 residents (see photo) examples of reasons to call the emergency 911 number vs. the non-emergency number and reasons why it sometimes takes longer to respond to some calls than others.

We scheduled this meeting to kick off the reorganization of the Neighborhood Crime Watch program and I’m pleased to say that 15 people stepped up to volunteer to be a part of the program.  There will be a meeting to get all volunteers together to get a game plan.  If you were not at the meeting but would still like to give some of your time to the program, please contact the board through the website www.mybayswater.org.  There is strength in numbers.

Officer Blackwell reassured us that Bayswater is still much safer than other housing additions in the area and that we’re on a good track to keep it that way. There have been a few incidents so far this year but nothing serious.

We understand some residents are having problems with the kids playing and cutting through their yards.  It has been our experience that calmly talking to the kids can go a long way.

Let’s keep our eyes and ears open and if anything is going on that doesn’t look right, call 911.  The next time it could be someone else calling about your property!

Once the Crime Watch Committee has been reorganized and is up and running, if you see anything suspicious or criminal or hear of anything that has or will happen, we ask that you contact a Crime Watch volunteer or send a message to our website www.mybayswater.com

If you feel it’s a situation that needs police attention, Officer Blackwell said that you would be welcome to contact him direct.  Here is his information:

Bayswater will provide an innovate way to alert the neighborhood to crime and important issues!

When there is theft or unusual activities, a yellow with black reflective lettering sign will be put on the island by the front entrance with the phone number: 579-9708  for residence to call.  Listen to the recorded message.  It will provide details for homeowners to help make them aware of undesirable activity within the area.

When you see that sign, make sure to call!  We want homeowners to:

1.    be informed,
2.    watch for each other, and
3.    report any unusual activity to the police.

Yes, we want you to call 911The police want you to call 911.  Provide details and help make your neighborhood safe.

The Bayswater HOA Board, along with the Community Crime Watch Committee Captain, invited one of Indianapolis' finest police officers to come and talk about safety for our Bayswater neighborhood.

As homeowners, you need to know that crime has increased in the city by 21% in the last 6 months. We want homeowners to know what to do to help protect themselves and their neighbors.

Here is what you need to do:

*    Know your neighbors.
*    Keep exterior house lights on from dusk to dawn.  Light up your home!
*    Keep emergency numbers by the phone.
*    Keep doors and windows locked at all times.
*    Engrave identification on your valuables - and keep a record of all serial numbers.
*    Be aware of your surroundings - call 911 on any strange or suspicious activity!
*    Make your home appear lived in at all times! Use timers.
*    Get involved / attend neighborhood meetings / talk to your neighbors.
*    Discuss safety with your children.

What is Neighborhood Crime Watch?
The Indianapolis Neighborhood Crime Watch program is one of the most effective and least costly ways of reducing and/or preventing residential property crimes.  It is a citizen involvement, neighborhood and community based effort designed to assist citizens and the police in reducing crime and increasing an overall sense of peace, safety and security in the neighborhood.

The program’s success is based in establishing improved communications between neighbors and achieving and sustaining an appropriate level of neighbor involvement to a point where the neighbors realize a reduction and/or achieves prevention of burglaries and other property crimes.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME WATCH?

  1. To increase citizen awareness of the crime of burglary and other property crimes prevalent to neighborhoods including theft and vandalism.
  2. To train citizens in various safety and residential security strategies to make their neighborhood and homes more secure.
  3. To develop a neighborhood action program where neighbors help watch each other’s residences and report suspicious persons and/or activities in their neighborhoods to the Indianapolis Police Department and to their neighborhood Crime Watch Leader.
  4. To encourage all citizens to cooperate with the Police in reporting crime.
